About Netd@ys Oz 2003

The Netd@ys Oz 2003 theme is about Cultural Diversity. This project and theme of Our Australia … Our World provides an ideal opportunity for schools to be involved in developing values and skills related to active citizenship locally, nationally or globally. Netd@ys Oz 2003 involves schools, classes or groups of students planning, acting, developing and sharing.

Themes

The four main themes of Netd@ys Oz 2003 are:

arrow My Place
arrow Population on the Move
arrow Gifts we Bring
arrow Making Connections - celebrating diversity

Netdays Oz 2003: Our Australia … Our World is an opportunity to participate in a range of activities that explore and investigate Australia's culture and lifestyle through researching, discussion, sharing, images, writing, artwork, reporting, chatting. We will also link with other countries projects and cultures.

Target Audience

The target audience of the Netd@ys Oz online project is students in years 4 - 10. However, there is an opportunity for young and old to participate and discover_communicate_collaborate.

This is the fifth year Australia has been involved with the Netd@ys Project with the European Commission, which concentrates on youth issues, especially in the areas of cultural diversity and citizenship.

Project Outcomes
  • facilitate a Netd@ys project involving Australian and overseas schools through collaborative efforts of EdNA Online, the state and territory Education Departments, Independent and Catholic Education and cultural and heritage organisations.
  • provide professional development and online support for participating teachers.
  • improve student understanding of local, national and global cultures through interesting and engaging telecommunications with participating schools and organisations like the War Memorial, Culture and Recreation Portal, Picture Australia and Australian Museums Online (AMOL).
  • use online technologies to build educational cultural connections between students, teachers and communities in Australia and the world.
  • work across the curriculum from SOSE, English, Media, Art, Music and Food Technology.

National Learning Outcomes

  • recognise, promote and celebrate immigration, identity and cultural diversity.
  • provide students with an opportunity to work individually, with the class/school/institute/college, and with a global youth audience by reflecting and predicting on the past, present and future.
  • integrate learning technologies in cross curriculum areas

Teachers will be able to demonstrate for this project:

  • knowledge and ability to use a variety of ICT (eg. upload files, email, scanning, online forums, chats, submitting text online, involvement in online learning activities like WebQuests, internet scavenger hunts and much more.)
  • an ability to participate in a range of online professional development activities.

Students will also use technology and appropriate tools to:

  • develop questioning and sharing processes using information literacy and information problem solving.
  • practice communication and information technology skills.
  • form and run online committees.
  • share experiences through reflecting and recording.
  • analyse data.
  • participate in online discussion forums and chats.

What do I do Now & Timeline

What do Teacher's Need to have Ready?

  1. Teacher's will need their own email account and to be able to check it regularly, especially if they want to participate in an email list serv and discuss strategies with other teachers.

  2. Register for the project, once you have read through the teacher documentation, looked at the website and know what the commitment is to participate in the Netd@ys Oz 2003 project.

  3. Develop a management strategy for checking email regularly. It's also important that all students have a go at checking/sending emails so a rotational checklist may have to be developed.

  4. Student access to an Internet connected computer/s.

  5. Decide on what your class will be involved in through out Netd@ys. Get some ideas via the three models suggested.

  6. Ensure parental consent is given for any student photograph or work which is used on the website. Please make sure if contributing student work that written permission is given within an email for the work to be used on the website and promotional material for Netd@ys Oz.

3. Preparing (from Now - 20th October)

Gather ideas and resources. You will need:

  • email set up

  • to have joined the Netd@ys email list and registered for the project

  • computer room booked

  • ideas on what parts of the Netd@ys project you will do and contribute to - see the models document for possible ideas

  • ideas on whether you will participate with other country projects - see the global partners link or the European Netd@ys website. Eg.

    • a selection of activities and forums from all themes

    • look at just one theme eg. Population on the Move

    • just be involved in appropriate forums and chats

    • extend on a unit you looked at earlier in the year.

  • consider what other resources you might need (hint: look on the theme links for further ideas and resources)

  • consider ways to involve the local community, another class or school locally, nationally or globally?

4. Implement, Participate, Share and Explore (from 20th October - November 14th)

a) Investigate and share online activities through creating images, writing, video, music and participating in chats, forums and email discussions.

Please remember that all photos and work submitted should be copyright free. If student photos are used, then parental permission must be gained in writing before the photos are submitted. When sending the student work to contribute to the Netd@ys Oz 2003 website please make sure a permission to use is included in the email.

b) See the suggested activities section below for ideas and information on the range of online activities available for students to participate in. Please note that there will be a large range, so it is a good idea that teachers and or students only select a few of the activities throughout the online project.

c) Students can contribute work via submit@edna.edu.au, to BotWot for any storytelling via http://www.botwot.com or by publishing on your own website and provide a weblink to submit@edna.edu.au to share with others.

d) Contribute your work submission and get involved in the chats and discussion forums.

e) Visit the other registered school websites to build up an idea of school culture and mutual support.

f) Try and link with other schools and cultures.

5. Celebration (from November 13th - November 20th)

Let's celebrate all the learning and contributions to Our Australia … Our World through the online chats and forums and viewing student work.

You could also celebrate with a Cultural party at your school/community. Invite community members into your classroom and celebrate Cultural Diversity. Think about the food, music, dance, different cultural celebrations and how you may put this together as a Cultural Party.

New Beginnings

Teachers may also be interested in the new Tasmania website called New Beginnings. Through this project refugee students (Grades 5 - 12) are invited to prepare, publish and submit their personal stories of seeking refuge and beginning life in a new country. Contributions may include written stories, drawings, digital photos, multimedia presentations etc.

All personal journeys submitted will be displayed in a virtual (web based) exhibition to coincide with Refugee Week, 22-26 October 2003.

Students who access the 'New Beginnings' website will be encouraged to respond to the published 'journeys'. The Discover Forum linked to the Responses section of the website will enable individual feedback to be recorded in a moderated setting.

Aims of the Project

1. Provide refugee students with an opportunity to 'tell' their stories.
2. Explore issues confronting refugees settling into new communities.
3. Link students to National and International multicultural communities.
4. Highlight the depth of culture achieved through immigration and migration of people of different races.
