arrow MAKING CONNECTIONS

Making Connections provide students with an opportunity to:

  • (a) tell others about themselves (interests, lifestyle and families) and their community,

  • (b) discover information about the people and communities in other areas of Australia (cultural, lifestyle and geographic diversity).

Aims include students being encouraged to:

  • pay attention to and consider the contributions and viewpoints of others when sharing ideas and opinions;

  • use constructive strategies to develop ways in which conflicts might be resolved;

  • develop experience of and understanding of the importance of fulfilling group responsibilities, and actively support other group members; and

  • use appropriate language that is sensitive to audience and culture.

Activities

1. What do you think? Discuss through the online discussion web forums on such topics:

  • What does Immigration mean to you?

  • What does multiculturalism mean to you?

  • What's special about your community/school?

  • What will Australia be like in 2020? The same, different - if so how?

Get involved now at: http://forum.edna.edu.au/event.asp?Id=18452

2. Do you want to link with cultures and communities across the world. Put a call out via the web discussion forums to link with other classes across the world about Cultural Diversity.

Get involved now at: http://forum.edna.edu.au/event.asp?Id=18452

You need to register for the forums to participate and post.

3. Put yourself in an immigrant's shoes. Where would you go? Why would you go there? How would you go there? How would you get there? What if you had no choice? What if you could not speak or understand English? Create your own creative story. Post your work through Contribute, publish on your own website or publish on BotWot at http://botwot.com.

4. Radio Bytes

You will have the opportunity to develop 15 - 30 minute radio programs that will be transmitted by traditional radio emissions through the Melbourne SYN FM (Community Youth Radio Network), with a simultaneous broadcast through an Internet Feed allowing interested students throughout Australia and the world to hear the broadcast over the internet. 5. New Beginnings

Through this project refugee students (Grades 5 - 12) are invited to prepare, publish and submit their personal stories of seeking refuge and beginning life in a new country. Contributions may include written stories, drawings, digital photos, multimedia presentations etc.

All personal journeys submitted will be displayed in a virtual (web based) exhibition to coincide with Refugee Week, 22-26 October 2003.

Students who access the 'New Beginnings' website will be encouraged to respond to the published 'journeys'. The Discover Forum linked to the Responses section of the website will enable individual feedback to be recorded in a moderated setting.

6. Celebrating Diversity

Design a float for the next Multicultural festival in your town. What will it reflect - colour, shape and design? A good place to start would be to consider the cultures within your own community. Design a float and if you have time develop a model of the float for display in your school. We would also love to see the designs and models so take some photos and send them via email to submit@edna.edu.au or publish them on your own website and we will link to them so you can share your work.
