Themes for Netdays 2004
arrow GIFTS WE BRING

Australia is a wonderful place with many people from all over the world who consider it home. The activities and discussion under this theme will aim to encourage us all to celebrate the wealth of "gifts" that we as a nation have from all people. It makes no difference whether you are 3rd or 4th generation Australians or new arrivals or Indigenous Australians or often seen as disadvantaged due to some disability, everyone has gifts to offer this nation.

Activities

1. We are all Special …

In this activity you will explore your uniqueness and learn to recognise and celebrate the uniqueness of others.

Students can begin an investigation of:

What is special about me?

The finished results could be drawings or writings or a speech which can be uploaded on your own class/school website where you can share what they have learnt about yourself. The theme of the presentation can be -

I am happy to be me because …

You could also create a 'What is special about me?' hanging mobile, photo gallery or slideshows and take photographs of these to place on the website.

2. In Our Class

Equipment needed: digital camera or camera and scanner.

A photo is taken of your class. Students identify the common features and differences between those in your class. This information could be put into a spreadsheet or table. (Only use first names or alias to identify students.) Fields in the spreadsheet could include: hair colour, eye colour, height, cultural background, languages spoken at home, special interests and special attribute(s) of your family. After graphing the characteristics of the class, the teacher can assist students in writing a class report beginning with -

In our class ...

Contribute this report to the Netd@ys website by sending it within an email to: submit@edna.edu.au.

3. Contributions to Australia …

Investigate ( 1 ) renowned artists, performing artists or sports person who have come to Australia and describe the legacy that they have brought with them.

Kostya Tzu is one sporting example where an Australian has gained international notoriety.

How have others made contributions to Australia and the world at large? Share your renowned person with the rest of the class, make a class list and contribute this to your community space.

4. Special Days/Special Celebrations
(eg Hanukah, Idul Fitri, Chinese New Year)

Choose between 3 and 5 special days or celebrations. Use the links below to help you identify these events. Describe how (and why) the special days have been tailored to fit modern Australian society or have they? Use a range of different media formats. Compare how the celebration was/is celebrated in the home country.

8. Cultural Celebration Party

Lets celebrate the 'Gifts We Bring' and the diversity in our class, community and world. As a small group design and plan a part of the cultural party for your class. You will need to decide who will design and make the invitations, who will make and do the decorations etc.

Ask your teacher for support in deciding what group does what task. You may like to brainstorm all the major things that need to be done in organising an event/party and then, once agreed, put these into a container. Form groups and get each group to pull out an idea from the container. This is just one idea. Your teacher will have other ideas.

Think about inviting special guests or community members. Remember, you will need to allow sufficient time to invite your guest to attend. Also you will need to decide how you will welcome your guest and what you will do while your guest is visiting your class/school. Consider the following when planning and designing your Cultural Celebration Party.

  • Special invitations

  • Dance

  • Decoration

  • Physical activity

  • Music

  • Arts and crafts

  • Food and drink (think about special diet or food considerations of those attending your cultural celebration party)

  • Where the party will take place

  • Safety - location and food preparation considerations

  • Who you need to help set up and prepare

  • The cost

  • Checklist

  • Special guest

Remember these considerations need to be decided as a class and then you will need to split into small working groups to plan, make and create.

Take photos of the celebration and share on the students submission area. (Be sure to get permission before submitting to Netdays)
