MY PLACE
The My Place theme gives you the opportunity to reflect on your place
in Australia or part of the world - within your community, your school,
your home, your town or city
Reflect:
-
what is unique to my place, why is it special?
-
what is the same or similar to other places?
-
what do I really like or enjoy about my place?
Activities
1. Through
My Window
Through my window is a simple and engaging e-mail activity designed to
allow students to communicate about their world through words and images.
It is also a great way to contact other schools.

3. Virtual Museum
Design a virtual museum with three rooms. One exhibition space reflects
my place in the past. One exhibition space reflects my place in the present.
One exhibition space reflects my place in the future.
This could be a bushfire museum for Canberra but any other type of museum
elsewhere that reflects aspects of 'My Place'.
4. Cultural Map
Our suburbs have sites of personal, family, community and historical significance.
There can be symbolism, self expression, stories, flora and fauna or particular
trees and spaces that become important to us. Draw a cultural map of your
suburb to explain it to a group of visitors from another part of Australia.
5. Cultural snapshot
Pick a year- Australians 1934? Research and paint a snapshot in story
form. Give the finished stories to your teacher. Teacher mixes the stories
and lays them flat on the classroom floor. Each student chooses an unknown
story and then has to illustrate. You could do this freehand or use the
paint and draw programs on the computer.
6. Take
a Virtual Tour
Investigate the experiences of some students from the Northern Territory.
Use some of the suggested ideas to develop a 'Day in the Life of
'
story about class members. Compare and contrast local daily experiences
with those of students from another region of Australia / city / country.

7. Junior
Journalist
You have been approached to write an article for the local newspaper about
what is occurring in the image below. Make the article interesting and
informative.
All work developed can be shared online - in Contribute or via BotWot
http://www.botwot.com.
You may be interested in doing this WebQuest as a supporting activity
in being a Junior Journalist but with a focus of an article on Cultural
Diversity.

8. New
Beginnings
Through this project refugee students (Grades 5 - 12) are invited to
prepare, publish and submit their personal stories of seeking refuge and
beginning life in a new country. Contributions may include written stories,
drawings, digital photos, multimedia presentations etc.
All personal journeys submitted will be displayed in a virtual (web based)
exhibition to coincide with Refugee Week, 22-26 October 2003.
Students who access the 'New Beginnings' website will be encouraged to
respond to the published 'journeys'. The Discover Forum linked to the
Responses section of the website will enable individual feedback to be
recorded in a moderated setting.
